Books & Stars

Don't miss this FREE summer family entertainment series on Wednesday evenings in our beautiful Northfield parks! Bring a picnic or purchase from an on-site food truck (ready to serve by 6:15pm), visit the bookmobile to check out items or get a library card (opens at 6:30pm), and take in a great show at 7pm.

See the 2018 Books & Stars schedule here.

Summer Afternoons: Drop-in, Free Fun Schedule

Free drop-in activities in the library's Bunday meeting room every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1-3pm starting Tues, June 12 and running through Thurs, July 26! Additional outdoor games and fun every week, as weather permits.

TUESDAYS are MAKE days. Come make stuff with us! From catapults to flip books to painted rocks, there will be different things for you to MAKE every Tuesday. Bridget from the Northfield Arts Guild will join us on most Tuesday afternoons. LEGO, MagnaTiles, and origami will also be available every Tuesday.

WEDNESDAYS are READAPALOOZA daysproviding an opportunity for elementary-aged kids to gather and hear stories read aloud. Many children cherish the time during their school day when their teacher reads to them, and READAPALOOZA days fill that important gap in the summer. Coloring and quiet activities will be available as kids listen, and we'll do at least one collaborative MadLibs-style story a week. Kids can drop in or stay the whole time, and time spent listening counts towards their summer reading logs. Siblings are always welcome, but the stories are geared towards kids going into 2nd grade through going into 5th grade. Each Wednesday, the stories will have a common theme:

Wednesday, June 13: Choose Your Own Adventure stories. We'll take a group vote at each twist and turn to determine where the stories take us!

Wednesday, June 20: SCARY stories. Drop in if you dare!

Wednesday, June 27: Silly stories and poems

Wednesday, July 11: Animal stories, both true and fictional

Wednesday, July 18: Unsolved mysteries: Atlantis and more

Wednesday, July 25: Myths, legends, and folklore

THURSDAYS are GAME days. Come play with us! Board games, card games, carnival games, and minute to win it games are on the bill for Thursdays. LEGO, MagnaTiles, and origami will also be available every Thursday.

Reserve a Reading Buddy! Offered Tuesdays through Thursdays from 9am-3pm

June 12th through July 25th, rising 1st through rising 5th graders can read one-on-one with a library page Reading Buddy! Reading Buddies are available by appointment (up to one half hour, once a week per child) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9am-3pm. Kids can practice reading aloud with a Reading Buddy, or have their Reading Buddy read to them. Time spent doing either counts towards their summer reading logs. Children can bring their own books, or Reading Buddies can help them find a good one for their session.

NOTE: Reading Buddies are NOT tutors. They have basic training on reading with children and finding a book that is the right difficulty level for a child. A child who makes an appointment one week won’t necessarily be scheduled with the same Reading Buddy for their next appointment. All appointments are subject to availability

Please email Children's Programming Librarian Emily at at least three business days in advance to set up an appointment.
